Description

Puri (ପୁରୀ) is a coastal pilgrimage city in the Indian state of Odisha. It stands on the Bay of Bengal, where a long sandy shore meets a dense grid of lanes. The Jagannath Temple dominates the town and ranks among the largest mass pilgrimage sites in India. Only Hindus may enter the temple itself, though the surrounding processional avenue is open to all. Nearby stand the Gundicha Temple, the Lokanath shrine and the wide Grand Road. Drums, conch shells and frying sweets fill the air. Travellers use Puri as a relaxed base for beach days and for trips to the Konark Sun Temple.
