Pirenópolis is the colonial jewel of the state of Goiás and a historic gold-mining town in the heart of the Cerrado. The town is best known for the Cavalhadas, one of Brazil’s most important traditional festivals, held during Pentecost, when horsemen in elaborate costumes and armor reenact the symbolic battle between Christians and Moors, a tradition rooted in medieval European chivalry.
