Petrópolis
Brazil · Rio de Janeiro · 838 m
Description
Petrópolis lies in the cool Serra dos Órgãos above Rio de Janeiro and was the summer capital of the Brazilian empire. Emperor Pedro II had the town laid out around canals and tree lined avenues, and settled it with German immigrants whose descendants still shape its architecture and its breweries. His summer palace is now the Imperial Museum, where visitors slide through the state rooms in felt overshoes to see the crown jewels. The glass and iron Crystal Palace, the neo Gothic cathedral holding the imperial tombs and the vast Quitandinha Palace complete a town that stays several degrees cooler than the coast.
