Nyamata
Rwanda Β· Eastern Province Β· 1400 m
Description
Nyamata is a small town on the dry Bugesera plain south of Kigali, and people come for one reason. The brick church at its centre and the smaller one at Ntarama a few kilometres away were places where thousands sought shelter in 1994 and were killed inside. Both are preserved rather than cleaned, with clothing heaped on the pews, bullet holes in the roof and bones laid out in the crypts, and both were inscribed together with Gisozi and Murambi on the World Heritage list. Around them Bugesera is flat farmland and shallow lakes with good birdlife. Nothing here is suitable for children.
