Description
Nong Khai (หนองคาย) lies along the Mekong in northeastern Thailand on the border with Laos and is connected to Vientiane by the Thai Lao Friendship Bridge. The city is known for its riverside promenade, Tha Sadet Market and the unusual Sala Kaeo Ku sculpture park, filled with monumental depictions of Buddhist and Hindu figures. A distinctive local tradition is the Naga fireballs, mysterious lights said to rise from the Mekong, particularly around the end of Buddhist Lent. Wat Pho Chai houses Luang Pho Phra Sai, one of the region’s most revered Buddha images. Nong Khai combines religious traditions, Mekong scenery and cross border culture into a distinctive destination in Isan.
