Description
Niokolo-Koba is Senegal's largest protected area, a UNESCO World Heritage Site of savannah, gallery forest and gently wooded hills along the upper Gambia river in the far south east. It holds the last West African lions and one of the region's few surviving populations of the western giant eland, the largest antelope on earth, along with hippo, buffalo, roan, kob, warthog and more than three hundred bird species. Chimpanzees live in the Assirik hills. Tracks are open in the dry season only, and Simenti on the river is the main camp.
