Touba
Senegal · Diourbel · 60 m
Description
Touba is the holy city of the Mouride brotherhood and the spiritual capital of Senegal, founded by Cheikh Amadou Bamba and grown into the country's second largest city. Its Great Mosque is among the biggest in Africa, its central minaret over eighty metres high, and Bamba's mausoleum lies inside it. The city governs itself under religious authority, with no bars, no nightlife and no tobacco. Once a year the Grand Magal pilgrimage brings millions of Mourides from across Senegal and the diaspora, one of the largest annual gatherings on the continent.
