Description
The Sine-Saloum is the delta where two rivers meet the Atlantic in a maze of mangrove channels, salt flats and low sand islands, listed by UNESCO for both its nature and its human history. Pelicans, flamingos, herons and terns breed on the sandbanks, and dolphins work the wider channels. Serer villages live from oysters, salt and fishing, and hundreds of shell mounds raised over two thousand years hold burial tumuli topped with baobabs. Travel is by pirogue between the islands, and Palmarin, Ndangane, Missirah and Toubacouta are the usual bases.
