Description
Ngaoundéré stands on the Adamawa plateau at eleven hundred metres, where the forest of the south gives way to open savanna and the air turns dry. The night train from Yaoundé ends here after fifteen hours, which makes the town the hinge of any overland journey north. The lamido rules from a palace of mud-brick walls and thatched audience halls, and visitors are received in the courtyard on Fridays. Volcanic cones stand around the town and the Vina falls drop into a gorge half an hour west. Grilled beef and Fulani milk dishes replace the coastal fish here.
