Description
Nakhon Si Thammarat (นครศรีธรรมราช) on the Gulf coast of southern Thailand is one of the region’s oldest important cities and was a major center of Theravada Buddhism as early as the medieval period. The city’s landmark is Wat Phra Mahathat, with its monumental chedi influenced by Sri Lankan architecture and regarded as one of southern Thailand’s most important Buddhist sanctuaries. Nakhon Si Thammarat is also a center of the traditional Nang Talung shadow puppet theatre. Inland, Khao Luang National Park encompasses southern Thailand’s highest peak, dense tropical rainforest and the multi-tiered Krung Ching Waterfall. Its rich heritage and diverse landscapes make it a cultural heart of the south.
