Nakhon Pathom (นครปฐม) lies about 55 kilometers west of Bangkok and is one of the oldest important centers of Buddhism in present day Thailand. The city is dominated by Phra Pathom Chedi, one of the world’s tallest Buddhist stupas and one of the country’s most impressive religious monuments. Sanam Chandra Palace combines Thai and European architectural influences amid extensive gardens and ponds. The Thai Human Imagery Museum features remarkably lifelike fiberglass figures depicting historical figures and scenes from everyday life, while the traditional Don Wai Market on the Tha Chin River is known for local food and sweets. Nakhon Pathom combines historic sights with a relaxed provincial atmosphere and makes an easy excursion from Bangkok.
