Portugal · Alentejo · 342 m
Description
Monsaraz is a picturesque medieval hilltop village in the Alentejo, surrounded by ancient walls and overlooking the Alqueva, Europe’s largest artificial lake. The village is known for its whitewashed houses, medieval castle, narrow cobbled streets and sweeping views across the Alentejo plains. The Alqueva region is the world’s first certified Starlight Tourism Destination, renowned for its exceptionally dark and clear night skies and outstanding conditions for stargazing. Around Monsaraz, dolmens, standing stones and the Cromeleque do Xerez bear witness to more than 6,000 years of human settlement, making the village a distinctive destination for history, culture and nature.
