Description
Fátima is one of Portugal’s most important Catholic pilgrimage sites and a spiritual center of global significance. The town is best known for the Marian apparitions of 1917, witnessed by three shepherd children, Lúcia dos Santos, Francisco and Jacinta Marto. Its expansive sanctuary, home to the Basilica of Our Lady of the Rosary and the Chapel of the Apparitions, attracts millions of pilgrims each year. Particularly impressive are the candlelight processions held during the major pilgrimage days from May through October. Fátima combines religious tradition, history and a distinctive atmosphere of reflection, making it one of Europe’s most important Catholic pilgrimage destinations.
