Description
Peniche is a traditional coastal town on Portugal’s Atlantic coast and one of the country’s most important surfing centres. Set on a striking peninsula of rugged cliffs, rock formations and sheltered coves, it is best known for the powerful Supertubos wave, which attracts international surfers. The traditional fishing harbour, the Fortress of Peniche, with its history as a political prison during the Estado Novo dictatorship, and the town’s distinctive bobbin lace tradition reflect its rich cultural heritage. Offshore, the protected Berlengas Islands are home to diverse seabird populations. Peniche combines maritime heritage, Portuguese coastal culture and a vibrant surfing tradition in a distinctive Atlantic destination.
