M'Goun UNESCO Global Geopark

Morocco · Béni Mellal-Khénifra · 2100 m

Description

The M’Goun UNESCO Global Geopark (المنتزه الجيولوجي مكون) is a spectacular mountain region in the central High Atlas, combining dramatic landscapes, geological heritage, and traditional Amazigh culture. Centered around the 4,071-meter-high M’Goun, the area is characterized by deep gorges, broad mountain valleys, striking rock formations, and terraced fields. The geopark is known for the picturesque Aït Bouguemez Valley, fossilized dinosaur tracks, ancient rock engravings, and historic granaries such as the remarkable cliffside granaries of Aoujgal. Traditional villages built of stone and earth, along with multi-day trekking routes across remote mountain passes, offer an authentic glimpse into life in the Atlas. Far from Morocco’s major cities and coastal regions, M’Goun reveals a quieter, rural, and particularly scenic side of the country.
