Description
Manizales is the capital of the Caldas Department and the highest-elevation major city in Colombia’s coffee region. This university town lies at an elevation of about 2,150 meters on a narrow Andean ridge and is known for its steep streets, pleasantly cool mountain climate, and vibrant café culture. The active Nevado del Ruiz rises above the city, while the nearby Los Nevados National Natural Park, with its glaciated volcanoes, páramo landscapes, hot springs, and spectacular hiking trails, is one of Colombia’s most impressive natural areas. Manizales combines the tradition of the coffee region with a vibrant cultural scene, reflected in the Feria de Manizales, the International Theater Festival, and the modern cable car. Surrounded by coffee plantations and cloud forests, the city is considered one of the most beautiful and at the same time most underrated bases for exploring the Colombian coffee region.
