Description

Santa Cruz de Mompox (Santa Cruz de Mompós), usually referred to simply as “Mompox” (Mompós), is a historic colonial town on Isla de Mompós in the Magdalena River system in Colombia. The historic town center, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the best-preserved colonial towns in Latin America and impresses with its whitewashed mansions, Baroque churches, shaded squares, and an exceptionally peaceful atmosphere. Mompós is known for its time-honored goldsmithing tradition, particularly its intricate filigree work, as well as for its solemn processions during Holy Week, which are among the most impressive on the continent. Its secluded location has preserved the town’s historic character for centuries and served as a source of inspiration for figures such as Gabriel García Márquez. As a once-important river port on the Magdalena River, Mompós continues to convey an authentic picture of Colombia’s colonial heritage to this day.
