Barichara is a picturesque colonial town in the department of Santander in northeastern Colombia and is considered one of the most beautiful in the country. The town captivates visitors with its cobblestone streets, whitewashed houses made of honey-yellow sandstone, red-tiled roofs, and exceptionally well-preserved colonial architecture. Perched high above the Suárez Canyon, Barichara combines a peaceful, authentic atmosphere with a vibrant tradition of arts and crafts and stonemasonry. Among the highlights is the historic Camino Real to Guane, a stone path built along an indigenous route through cactus-filled landscapes and dry forest. Nearby San Gil, Colombia’s hub for outdoor and adventure sports, offers whitewater rafting, paragliding, and canyoning, a charming contrast to Barichara’s timeless serenity.
