Description

Madurai (மதுரை) is one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities in India and lies in the state of Tamil Nadu. It grew around the Meenakshi Amman Temple, whose towering gopurams rise above the old bazaars. The temple complex is a vast pilgrimage centre and the heart of city life. Other landmarks include the Thirumalai Nayakkar Mahal palace and the Gandhi Memorial Museum. The Thiruparankundram and Azhagar Kovil shrines sit in the hills nearby. Streets stay busy late into the night with flower stalls and idli vendors. Madurai serves as the gateway to the temple towns of southern Tamil Nadu.
