Description
Lamanai is one of Belize’s most important Maya archaeological sites, beautifully situated on the shores of the New River Lagoon in the north of the country. Occupied for more than 3,000 years, it ranks among the longest continuously inhabited settlements in the Maya world. The site is renowned for its monumental temples, including the Mask Temple and the High Temple, which rise dramatically above the surrounding rainforest. Many visitors reach Lamanai by boat along the New River, a journey that also offers excellent opportunities to spot crocodiles, howler monkeys, and a wide variety of birdlife. Combining millennia of history, lush tropical nature, and a spectacular setting, Lamanai is widely regarded as one of Central America’s most fascinating archaeological destinations.
