Description
Corozal Town sits on Corozal Bay at Belize's northern tip, a quiet border town rebuilt in Caribbean colonial style after a 1955 hurricane levelled the original settlement. It occupies the site of the Maya city of Chetumal, and the pyramid of Santa Rita rises within walking distance of downtown, once the town's ceremonial heart. A short boat ride across the bay reaches Cerros, a Maya trading centre built directly on the shore whose tallest structure looks back over the water to Corozal itself. The waterfront promenade along the bay draws an easy evening stroll, and the town serves as a low-key gateway to the freshwater Four Mile Lagoon and the reef town of Sarteneja beyond.
