Description
The Great Blue Hole is one of Belize's most famous natural attractions and ranks among the world's most spectacular diving sites. Located at the center of Lighthouse Reef Atoll off the country's Caribbean coast, this nearly perfect circular marine sinkhole measures about 318 meters (1,043 feet) across and reaches a depth of approximately 124 meters (407 feet). The Great Blue Hole is renowned for its deep blue waters, massive limestone stalactites formed during the last Ice Age, and its fascinating marine life, including Caribbean reef sharks and a variety of tropical fish. It is part of the UNESCO-listed Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System and is typically visited on day trips or liveaboard diving expeditions from the nearby cayes. The Great Blue Hole is considered one of the Caribbean's most remarkable natural wonders and an iconic symbol of Belize.
