Lake Achensee (Achensee) is Tyrol's largest lake and a fjord-like body of water nestled between the Karwendel and Rofan mountain ranges north of Innsbruck. It is renowned for its crystal-clear turquoise waters, spectacular alpine scenery, and excellent conditions for sailing, windsurfing, hiking, and other outdoor activities. Among its highlights are the historic Achensee Railway, which has connected Jenbach with the lake since 1889 and is Europe's oldest cog railway still operated exclusively by steam locomotives, and the traditional Achensee boat service. Combining unspoiled natural beauty, year-round recreational opportunities, and a peaceful atmosphere, Lake Achensee is widely regarded as one of Austria's most scenic lakes and one of Tyrol's premier travel destinations.
