La Guajira is Colombia’s northernmost region and a vast arid peninsula between the Caribbean Sea and the desert. The landscape is characterized by rust-red sand dunes, cacti, salt lagoons, and a rugged coastline where the Taroa Dunes at Punta Gallinas merge directly into the turquoise sea. The region is home to the Wayuu, Colombia’s largest indigenous group, whose culture continues to shape life in La Guajira to this day. The off-road route from Riohacha through Alta Guajira to the northernmost tip of South America is one of the country’s most impressive road trips. The extraordinary combination of desert, the Caribbean, and indigenous culture makes La Guajira one of Colombia’s most fascinating landscapes.
