Khajuraho (खजुराहो) is a small town in the Indian state of Madhya Pradesh and one of the country's most important cultural treasures. It is world-renowned for its Hindu and Jain temples, built by the Chandela dynasty between about AD 950 and 1050. Designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site, the temples are celebrated for their exquisitely carved sandstone sculptures depicting deities, dancers, musicians, scenes of everyday life, and the famous erotic reliefs. These sensual carvings represent only a small portion of the extensive sculptural program and continue to be interpreted in various ways. With their remarkable architecture, outstanding craftsmanship, and spiritual significance, the temples of Khajuraho rank among the finest masterpieces of Indian art and are one of the country's most extraordinary historical attractions.
