Description

Jos sits at twelve hundred metres on the Plateau, high enough that the British made it a hill station and the climate is temperate all year, which is why it grew as a tin mining town and a retreat from the heat. Granite inselbergs and boulder fields break the grassland around it. The Jos Museum holds the Nok terracotta heads, the oldest known figurative sculpture in sub-Saharan Africa at more than two thousand years old, and next to it the Museum of Traditional Nigerian Architecture reconstructs buildings from across the country at full size.
