João Pessoa
Brazil · Paraíba · 40 m
Description
João Pessoa is the capital of Paraíba and one of the oldest cities in Brazil, wrapped in so much greenery that it is often called the second greenest city in the world. Ponta do Seixas just south of town is the easternmost point of the Americas, so the sun reaches the continent here first, and the Cabo Branco lighthouse above it draws people for sunrise. The colonial centre keeps the gilded São Francisco cultural complex, one of the finest Baroque ensembles in the country. Each evening at Jacaré beach a saxophonist plays Ravel from a boat as the sun goes down over the river.
