Description
Jalapão is a vast cerrado wilderness in the east of Tocantins state, crossed on sand tracks by four wheel drive and known for landscapes that exist almost nowhere else in Brazil. Orange dunes rise against a wall of table mountains, and clear rivers cut through open savannah to waterfalls such as the horseshoe shaped Cachoeira da Velha. Its signature attraction is the fervedouro, a spring where water pushes up through white sand with enough force that a swimmer cannot sink. Villages along the route weave golden grass into capim dourado craftwork, and nights bring an unusually dark sky.
