Description
Hampi (ಹಂಪಿ) is located in the Indian state of Karnataka and is one of India's most remarkable archaeological sites. Once the capital of the powerful Vijayanagara Empire, it was among the largest and wealthiest cities of its time before being sacked and abandoned in 1565. Today, Hampi is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, renowned for its more than 1,600 surviving monuments, including the Virupaksha Temple, the Vittala Temple with its iconic Stone Chariot and musical pillars, as well as numerous palaces, bazaars, and waterworks. Set amid a spectacular landscape of massive granite boulders and divided by the Tungabhadra River, Hampi combines extraordinary architecture, centuries of history, and breathtaking natural scenery, making it one of India's most captivating destinations.
