Description
Hallein is a small town south of Salzburg built on one of Europe's oldest industries, the salt that gave the whole region its name. On the Dürrnberg plateau above town, the Hallein Salt Mine has been worked since Celtic times and now takes visitors down wooden miner's slides to an underground salt lake crossed by boat. The adjoining Celtic Museum holds finds from more than two thousand years of settlement on the mountain, including the famous beaked jug, while the Silent Night Museum preserves the house where Franz Xaver Gruber composed the world's best-known Christmas carol. A compact old town of narrow lanes and pastel façades completes a place easily seen on a day trip from Salzburg.
