Garoua, Cameroon

Garoua

Cameroon · North · 174 m

Description

Garoua lies on the Bénoué river in the hot northern plains and is the base for the big-game country of Cameroon. Three protected areas are within reach, and Bénoué National Park an hour south holds hippo in the river, roan antelope, kob and the lions and elephants that still move through the corridor towards Faro. The river port shipped cotton downstream to Nigeria until the flow became too unreliable. In town the lamido's palace, the mosque and the covered market fill the mornings before the heat. Hunting concessions surround the parks and set the rhythm of the season.
