Description
English Harbour on the south coast is the one place in Antigua that visitors come for rather than come across. Nelson's Dockyard is the only Georgian naval dockyard still working anywhere in the world, built into a hurricane hole so deep that the Royal Navy could ride out storms in it, and restored as a UNESCO World Heritage Site with its capstan house, sail loft and officers' quarters still standing. Shirley Heights on the ridge above looks straight down into the harbour. Its Sunday evening barbecue with steel band has run for decades and fills the lookout.
