Elvas is a historic border fortress town in Portugal’s Alentejo region and an outstanding example of European military architecture. The UNESCO World Heritage city is known for its vast system of bastions, ramparts, dry moats, and outer forts, considered the largest bastioned fortification system with dry moats in the world. The impressive Amoreira Aqueduct, medieval castle, and whitewashed streets of the old town define its distinctive character.
