Cidade de Goiás
Brazil · Goiás · 512 m
Description
Cidade de Goiás, still widely called “Goiás Velho”, is the former capital of the Brazilian state of Goiás and a UNESCO World Heritage town. Founded by bandeirante gold prospectors, it keeps a dense colonial core of whitewashed houses, stone gutters and steep cobbled lanes that follow the hills above the Rio Vermelho. The Igreja de Sant'Ana, the Palácio Conde dos Arcos and the Museu das Bandeiras recall the era when gold from these streams financed the interior. Every Holy Week the torchlit Procissão do Fogaréu fills the dark streets with hooded farricocos, the town's most striking tradition.
