Description
Chittorgarh (चित्तौड़गढ़) is a town in the Indian state of Rajasthan, known for the largest fort in the country. The fort spreads over a rocky plateau above the plain of the Berach River. Inside its walls stand the nine storey Vijay Stambh, the older Kirti Stambh, ruined palaces, step tanks and Hindu and Jain temples. The site recalls three long sieges and the mass self immolation of its defenders. Wide open ground, grazing goats and crumbling sandstone give the plateau a quiet, melancholy air. Travellers stop here between Udaipur and Bundi, often adding the pilgrim temple of Sanwariya Seth nearby.
