Caño Cristales, Colombia

Caño Cristales

Colombia · Meta · 450 m

Description

Caño Cristales is known as the “liquid rainbow” and is considered one of the most extraordinary rivers on Earth. It originates in the Serranía de la Macarena, an isolated mountain range in the heart of Colombia, and flows through the Serranía de la Macarena National Park, where its crystal-clear water transforms into a spectacular display of red, yellow, green, blue, and black during the season. This phenomenon is caused by the aquatic plant Macarenia clavigera, whose intense colors, combined with light-colored sand, dark rock, and crystal-clear water, create a natural wonder unique in the world. The strictly protected river is accessible via the village of La Macarena. Hikes along the river and swimming in designated natural pools make Caño Cristales one of Colombia’s most fascinating natural experiences.
