Description
Cachoeira is a historic city in the Brazilian state of Bahia and a major cultural and historical center of the Recôncavo Baiano region. Located along the Paraguaçu River, the city is known for its colonial architecture, baroque churches, elegant mansions, and well-preserved historic streets dating back to the height of the sugar and tobacco trade. Cachoeira combines Brazil’s colonial heritage with vibrant Afro-Brazilian traditions, religious festivals, music, and local craftsmanship. Known as the “Heroic City” (Cidade Heroica), it played an important role in Bahia’s struggle for independence and is today regarded as one of the state’s most important cultural destinations. Together with the neighboring city of São Félix, connected by the historic Dom Pedro II Bridge, Cachoeira reflects the rich history, cultural diversity, and enduring traditions of Bahia.
