Description
Batalha is a historic town in central Portugal, best known for the magnificent Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória. The UNESCO World Heritage Site was commissioned by King João I in 1388 to commemorate Portugal’s victory over Castile at the Battle of Aljubarrota in 1385. The monumental complex is regarded as one of the finest masterpieces of Portuguese Gothic architecture and combines Gothic design with later Manueline ornamentation. Its highlights include the imposing monastery church, the richly decorated Royal Cloister, the Founder's Chapel and the Unfinished Chapels. Batalha is one of Portugal’s most important historic sites and a remarkable destination for those interested in history, culture and architecture.
