Description
Bandipur (बन्दिपुर) is a Newar bazaar town strung along a ridge above the Marsyangdi valley, and it survives largely intact for an accidental reason. It grew rich as a trading post on the route between India and Tibet, then was bypassed when the Prithvi Highway was built along the river below, which left its main street unwidened and its carved shopfronts standing. Traffic is kept off that street, so the town is unusually quiet for Nepal. The ridge gives an open view of Dhaulagiri, the Annapurnas and Manaslu, best from the Thani Mai temple above town at sunrise. Below the ridge lies Siddha Gufa, said to be the largest cave in Nepal, reached by a steep walk of about an hour and a half through forest.
