Description

Baden bei Wien is Austria's foremost historic spa town, set at the edge of the Vienna Woods some 26 kilometres south of the capital. Romans bathed in its sulphur springs as Aquae Pannoniae, and from 1793 the Habsburgs made it the imperial summer residence, giving the town its uniform Biedermeier townscape. Its 52-hectare Kurpark is among the largest spa gardens in Europe, and the Römertherme still draws bathers to the same warm springs. Beethoven spent three summers here and worked on his Ninth Symphony in a modest house on Rathausgasse. Since 2021 Baden has been inscribed as part of the Great Spa Towns of Europe, alongside Baden-Baden and Karlovy Vary.
