Description
Aurangabad (औरंगाबाद) is a city in the Indian state of Maharashtra, officially renamed Chhatrapati Sambhajinagar. The Mughal governor Aurangzeb made it his Deccan capital in the 17th century. Bibi ka Maqbara, a marble tomb modelled on the Taj Mahal, rises north of the old walls. Panchakki drives a mill with water carried from the hills. Rock-cut Buddhist caves overlook the city from a ridge. Fifty-two gates, museums and Himroo weaving workshops fill the streets between. The rock temples of Ellora and the painted halls of Ajanta lie within reach by road. Most travellers stay here to see both World Heritage sites.
