Angra do Heroísmo, Portugal

Angra do Heroísmo

Portugal · Azores · 15 m

Description

Angra do Heroísmo is the historic heart of Terceira and has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site since 1983. Its pastel-colored houses, Baroque churches, and imposing fortresses of São Sebastião and São João Baptista reflect the city’s former importance as a strategic port and key stopover for transatlantic shipping. Terceira combines this maritime heritage with a fascinating volcanic landscape, best experienced at Algar do Carvão, Gruta do Natal, and the fumaroles of Furnas do Enxofre. Traditional festivals and the island’s distinctive touradas à corda, in which bulls are led through the streets, add to its unique cultural character. Terceira brings together history, volcanic landscapes, and vibrant island traditions.
