Brazil · Pará · 45 m
Description
Alter do Chão is an idyllic village on the banks of the Tapajós River in northern Brazil, about 35 kilometres from Santarém. Renowned for its white-sand beaches, crystal-clear waters and lush rainforest surroundings, it is often called the “Caribbean of the Amazon”. During the dry season, the receding river reveals vast sandbanks, including the famous Ilha do Amor, considered one of Brazil's most beautiful river beaches. Alter do Chão captivates visitors with its relaxed atmosphere, boat trips through lagoons and rainforest, opportunities to experience the culture of traditional riverside communities, and remarkable wildlife, including the chance to spot the iconic pink river dolphins. The village is one of the Amazon's leading ecotourism destinations and an ideal base for exploring the spectacular landscapes of the Tapajós River.
