Description
Acatenango (Volcán de Acatenango) is one of Guatemala's highest and most spectacular volcanoes, rising to 3,976 metres (13,045 ft) just outside the colonial city of Antigua. The dormant volcano is best known for its breathtaking views of the neighboring, highly active Volcán de Fuego, whose frequent eruptions send glowing lava and ash high into the night sky. The challenging hike passes through farmland, pine forests, cloud forest, and barren volcanic terrain before reaching the high slopes near the summit. Many hikers spend the night at Base Camp to witness sunrise over Guatemala's volcanic chain and, on exceptionally clear days, views stretching all the way to the Pacific coast. Acatenango is widely regarded as one of Central America's premier trekking destinations and a paradise for hikers, nature lovers, and photographers.
