Description
Chichicastenango, affectionately known by locals as “Chichi”, is a traditional market town in the Guatemalan Highlands and one of the most important cultural centers of the K’iche’ Maya. The town is best known for its vibrant market, held every Thursday and Sunday, which ranks among the largest and most traditional Indigenous markets in Central America. Chichicastenango is also famous for the Church of Santo Tomás, where Catholic liturgy and ancient Maya ceremonies continue to be practiced side by side. Colorful textiles, intricately carved masks, traditional handicrafts, lively religious festivals, and enduring customs shape the town’s unique atmosphere. Chichicastenango is regarded as one of Guatemala’s most remarkable centers of Indigenous culture and spirituality, offering visitors an authentic insight into the rich heritage of the K’iche’ Maya.
