Quetzaltenango, better known as Xela, is the cultural heart of Guatemala’s western highlands, where colonial heritage, living Maya K’iche’ traditions, and modern city life come together. Situated at an elevation of around 2,300 metres (7,550 feet), the city is known for its neoclassical architecture, renowned Spanish language schools, traditional markets, and relaxed atmosphere. Surrounded by volcanoes, hot springs, and dramatic mountain landscapes, Xela serves as the ideal base for climbing Santa María Volcano, visiting the sacred Chicabal Crater Lake, relaxing in the Fuentes Georginas hot springs, or embarking on the multi-day trek to Lake Atitlán. As the region’s principal cultural and economic centre, Quetzaltenango offers an authentic glimpse into Guatemala beyond the country's main tourist destinations.
