The Federated States of Micronesia consist of four island states, Yap, Chuuk, Pohnpei and Kosrae, scattered across a vast area of the western Pacific. Chuuk Lagoon holds dozens of Japanese ships sunk in 1944, making it one of the greatest wreck diving sites in the world.
On Pohnpei, the ruined stone city of Nan Madol, built on artificial islets, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Yap is famous for its giant stone money and manta rays, while Kosrae offers quiet reefs, rainforest and the ruins of Lelu.
