Kiribati is a nation of coral atolls straddling the equator in the central Pacific, spread across three island groups and more than three million square kilometres of ocean. Kiritimati, or Christmas Island, is one of the largest coral atolls in the world and famous for bonefishing and seabirds.
The Phoenix Islands Protected Area, one of the largest marine reserves on earth, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Relics of the Second World War battle of 1943 remain on Tarawa, the capital atoll, and the Line Islands are among the first places on earth to greet each new day.
