Travel to Christmas Island

Christmas Island is an Australian territory in the Indian Ocean, famous for the annual migration of more than a hundred million red crabs. At the start of the wet season, usually between October and December, the crabs march from the forest to the sea to spawn, and roads are closed to protect them.

Around two thirds of the island is protected as a national park, with rainforest, blowholes and seabirds such as Abbott's booby and the Christmas frigatebird. Divers and snorkellers find steep reef walls, and whale sharks often visit the coast in the wet season.
