Christmas Island · Christmas Island
Short description of Flying Fish Cove
Flying Fish Cove is the main settlement of Christmas Island, an Australian territory far closer to Java than to Perth, where Chinese, Malay and European families live together. At the start of the wet season, usually in November or December, tens of millions of red crabs march from the forest to the sea to spawn, closing roads and covering the town. The cove itself has a small beach where a coral wall drops away a few metres offshore, one of the best dives in the Indian Ocean. Temples, a mosque and old colonial houses line the terraces above the jetty.
